Who is the Parowan Prophet?

He's an old guy who used to be a member of the Church but was excommunicated for polygamy and preaching apostate doctrine. He has dreams of an atomic holocaust in the U.S. and used to write warnings in the Letters to the Editor of the local paper, even naming the date when it was going to happen. When his prediction didn't come true, he would just set a new date. He pretty much quit writing until just before this past Christmas when he had another dream, in which he saw himself coming out of Wal-Mart, looked towards the southwest and saw a huge mushroom cloud. He predicted that there would be an attack before Christmas. If not then - sometime soon. A reporter from the L.A. Times caught wind of him and came to Parowan for an interview. I looked it up on the internet, and there was quite an article about him which included pictures of his few followers. Our renters were in the picture. They are all caught up in survivalist things - even had a bed down in our old cellar! We've seen the prophet at the old house several times, and once Val saw him coming up out of the cellar. He asked him what he was doing, and he said the Shaffers had asked him to look over their storage stuff. I think he was looking at the cellar to see if it would qualify as a bomb shelter. I don't mean to make fun of them for trying to prepare, but I don't understand how they can look to that old guy as their "prophet," and not realize that if the Lord was going to give that kind of a warning to the world it would be through someone more believable than him!

He does sound a bit crazy! I will have to look up stuff about him! My friend from highschool had a grandpa (who recently passed away) who started acting like that and got all crazy and said that they needed to get ready and move to the hills because they thought the world was going to end. They had their entire living room full of camping stuff and things that they were going to take with them, he even convinced one of his kids that they needed to do it too and I think they sold their house and bought an RV and were moving out somewhere in the boonies. I wonder if the "Parawan Prophet" had something to do with this...? Or maybe that it was that my friends' grandpa started going crazy right before he died and his brain wasn't quite all there, hence the dreams and visions. It's too bad that he sucked some of the family into this and got them all scared! I'm with you, if there was really something that big going to happen, don't you think the Lord would give the info to the REAL prophet!?

I guess that would explain some things when you saw the renters in the picture online! Crazy. I read a little on his website and he was talking about basements and bomb shelters. Sounds like he was checking it out!

One of my visiting teachers a few years ago told me a bit about the Parowan Prophet. Her dad is a lawyer in town and has worked with this man. Apparently he used to be fairly normal but had some kind of accident. I think he was flying a plane and it crashed into electrical wires or something like that.

Anyway... It messed him up. It was after that he decided he was a prophet, and after that his wife left him.

I might not be remembering it right, but I think that's what she said.

I sure hope he doesn't ever go too far. It worries me that he's got your renters involved. People that used to belong to the church usually spend the rest of their lives persecuting it. Joseph Smith said the burden of the blame for his persecution lay mainly on false brothers; those that left the church.
